Climate change

The impacts of climate change pose a threat to sustainable development and the stability of societies. Aarhus Centres help to raise public awareness on climate change as well as required adaptation measures through the organization of public information meetings, workshops, awareness-raising campaigns while promoting stakeholder engagement to participate in the decision-making process. 

Decision Making

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

Communities are on the front line when natural hazards hit. Aarhus Centres are key players in promoting community-based efforts to reduce disaster risks and the security-related impacts of natural hazards. They organize trainings and awareness-raising campaigns, support the local DRR plans, and encourage discussions and a dialogue aiming to increase the resilience of communities and societies.  

Eco Tourism

Eco-journalism

Being a platform for discussion regarding natural resources, environmental security, regional cooperation and exchange of environmental information, Aarhus Centres organize activities such as contests and festivals, training and field visits for journalists who operate in the environmental field.     

Extractive industries, including mining

The environmental impacts of mining and other extractive industries often lead to concerns of the local population, in particular when information is not accessible. Aarhus Centres play an important role in disseminating information regarding mining and the extractive industries. They hold training sessions, workshops and meetings and ensure public participation in the decision-making process by creating a platform for co-operation among key players.     

Environmental Education

Environmental impact assessment (EIA)

Public participation in conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) plays a key role in achieving transparent decision-making processes. In this context, Aarhus Centres contribute by disseminating information, organizing public hearings and consultations for the public.   

Environmental legislation

Environmental legislation in many regions where Aarhus Centres operate is still in the process of development. Aarhus Centres are therefore key resource centres where citizens can inform themselves about the existing legislation relevant to their environmental rights. Aarhus Centres also inform judges and advocates about the Aarhus Convention and the existing environmental laws and organize public hearings on projects, draft laws and policies.

Raising awareness of gender issues regarding environmental challenges is of crucial importance. Aarhus Centres strive to integrate a gender perspective in their work as well as to promote gender equality in, as well as through, their activities.

Aarhus Centres directly and indirectly contribute to the transition to green economy. For example, they play a distinctive role in enhancing green economy and resource efficiency initiatives thanks to their bridging role between communities, governmental authorities, private sector and other key players.

Hazardous waste, including uranium tailings

Aarhus Centres address the lack of public awareness of existing or potential risks linked to hazardous waste, including uranium tailings. Enhanced co-operation among key players is crucial to ensure co-operation and access to information regarding hazardous waste and uranium tailings.

Security and sustainable development are interlinked. Aarhus Centres link environment and security to sustainable development and act as a bridge between governments, private sector and civil society.   

Youth empowerment

Empowering youth in environmental-related activities is a key activity carried out by the Aarhus Centres. This includes conducting information sessions and activities related to the main principles of Aarhus Convention with the involvement of school children and young teachers, community members, representatives of NGO’s and employees of state agencies.

Water resources management

Well-governed water resources are crucial for sustainable development and conflict prevention. Aarhus Centres work to facilitate dialogue, decision-making and public participation in the field of sustainable and equitable water management at local, national and transboundary level.   

Urban waste

Since they are present in urban areas, Aarhus Centres are key players to address the issue of urban waste management. Through training, workshops and public hearings tailored for a wide range of players, Aarhus Centres aim to fill the gap of skills and information needed by the public.
